Message
from the President and the Artistic Director
Once again we
look forward to welcoming young musicians to our competition in the
town of Ancona, known as the "elbow of Italy" (ŕnkon
in ancient Greek). In fact, Ancona lies on a small hilly
peninsula which juts out into the sea in a northerly direction,
offering first time visitors an unexpected sight of the sun setting
over the Adriatic Sea, a particularly stunning experience when
viewed from the Cathedral of San Ciriaco which towers over the
harbour. Originally a piceno village, Ancona’s history is
marked by eras of Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Holy Roman Empire rule,
as well as by savage incursions from Goths, Lombards and Saracens.
After the Carolingian conquest, Ancona became the capital of the
Marca di Ancona, whence the name of the modern region. By the
end of the XII century the town became an independent comune,
then lost its independence in 1532 when Pope Clement VII
incorporated Ancona in the dominion of papal states. The town later
witnessed a brief interval of French occupation during the
Napoleonic wars. Today Ancona’s busy harbour acts as a vital link
between east and west with its intense commercial traffic to the
Balkans and to Greece.
The Adriatic Music Competition, founded in Ancona
in 1999, was designed
with an aim to encourage young people to move forward in their
musical studies and to give candidates an opportunity of meeting and
listening to other musicians. We hope that the
concert we are offering in 2008 to the first prize winners of the
competition will create a particularly stimulating experience during
their young careers.
We are truly grateful to the Istituto Superiore
di Studi Musicali "G.B. Pergolesi" in Ancona who have once again
kindly allowed us to hold the competition on their premises.
Our sincere thanks also go to Salvatore Accardo,
Franco Cerri, Sir James Galway and Maria Tipo, the great masters who
honour our competition with their patronage.
